Main South Rd, Carmen Rd intersection changes

Project Objectives • Increase capacity for west-bound vehicles on Main South Rd/Carmen Rd/Shands Rd intersection. • Improve queuing capacity for right turning vehicles into Carmen Rd. • Improve safety on the west bound approach to the Carmen Road/Main South Rd intersection. • Provision for safe access to Brynley St, Tower St and the old Clock Tower site. Timeline • September 7 - Consultation opens. • September 28 - Consultation closes. • October 2015 - Submitters notified of outcome of consultation and board meeting date. • Tuesday 17 November 2015 Riccarton/Wigram Community Board Meeting. • Thursday 10 December - Anticipated a city council decision. • Early 2016 - Works to commence (subject to approval).

ANDREW KING

Motorists are being given a chance to give their views on changes to the busy Main South and Carmen Rds intersection. The right-turn lane on Main South Rd turning into Carmen Rd has been identified by city council staff as insufficient in its length to accommodate the right-turning queue. There are two proposed options that are being looked at to fix the problem. Option one provides an

extended right-turn bay from the Main South Rd eastern approach into Carmen Rd, to increase the right-turn queuing capacity. This extension to the rightturn lane will remove the gap in the central median which is currently used by vehicles turning right into Tower and Brynley Sts. A separate U-turn bay is provided further east on Main

South Rd, which will allow eastbound vehicles to perform a U-turn and then left turn into Tower or Brynley Sts. The second option provides an extended right-turn bay from the Main South Rd eastern approach into Carmen Rd, to increase the right-turn queuing capacity. This right-turn lane will be longer than the one provided in option one.

This will help to reduce congestion on Main South Rd by reducing the frequency that the right-turn queue extends into the through lane. This extension to the rightturn lane will remove the gap in the central median just like option one. During the afternoon peak traffic and at the weekend the right-turn queue extends beyond

the end of the right-turn lane. This blocks one of the straight-through lanes. This can cause straightthrough vehicles trapped behind queuing right-turn vehicles to make inappropriate lane changes to get through the intersection. > Feedback can be given through the city council’s ‘have your say’ page at http://www.ccc.govt.nz/thecouncil/have-your-say/whatshappening-now/consultations/

Quarry takes fight to court ANDREW KING

Winstone Aggregates is heading to the Environment Court to fight an abatement notice for over-excavating at its Yaldhurst quarry. Earlier this month, the quarry operator on Old West Coast Rd, was served an abatement notice by Environment Canterbury for excavating below its consented level and near the water table. The abatement notice required Winstone Aggregates to back fill the excavated areas to comply with current regional rules.

But now the company has obtained a stay, meaning the matter will go to the Environment Court for a hearing in November. Three weeks ago furious residents confronted ECan at a heated meeting, frustrated with lack of response from the regional council regarding their concerns on quarries in the area. Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora was “absolutely disgusted” that Winstone Aggregates had appealed. “Why don’t Winstone just

look after the people that are their neighbours and work within the rules,” he said. “I’d like to see them [ECan] take further action. If they can they should stop all activity in that quarry until they can sort it out.” The Yaldhurst Rural Residents Association said they were not surprised that the company would appeal the abatement notice. At the meeting with ECan residents said they were concerned drinking water had been affected.

Authentic

They accused ECan of being ‘toothless’ when it came to enforcing resource consents. But ECan said on Wednesday there was no evidence Winstone’s activities had contaminated drinking water. ECan regional manager monitoring and compliance Marty Mortiaux said it would ensure companies quarrying at Yaldhurst complied with the conditions of their consents and regional rules. “We will take all reasonable steps to make sure this happens,” he said.

A butcher who works at Elite Meats, Hub Hornby, has captained the New Zealand national butchery team, the Sharp Blacks to victory in the Tri-Nations championship. Skipper Corey Winder led the Sharp Blacks to a third consecutive Tri-Nations victory over Australia and the United Kingdom, in Auckland September 10. The Sharp Blacks’ winning end product was an unconventional burger, in which the buns were made from lamb mince, and the patty from falafel. Next year’s Tri-Nations competition will be held in Australia.

Education: Better than it used to be? Richard Edmundson – Hornby High School principal The childrens’ shoes? It does’nt matter. And just five from a-e: Accomodate, basicly, compitition, diarhoea, embarassment. Do the above drive me nuts? Of course they do, and that’s not even counting out-ofcontrol sentences that go on to Ashburton and back. A full-stop please! However, in spite of these and similar teeth-grinding moments – “I could of done it” – the answer to the title-question is a resounding yes. Once upon a time New Zealand society generally accepted a certain style of secondary teaching which we can call “chalk and talk” or contenttransmission. The system was for the students to come to the content or leave. This is because we did not expect every student to remain at school. The system we were operating in had been designed to

gate-keep students. Thus school certificate was scaled to fail 50 per cent of those who sat, let alone the students who left before the exams. Now, however, the imperatives are different. In the 1990s there was a seachange towards adapting systems to meet individual need, not the other way round. Our awareness that we need to take better educational-care of special needs students is one example of this. Social justice, let alone economic necessity, cannot allow such waste of human potential

that had previously been accepted. Equity of opportunity – a fair go – is in New Zealand’s cultural DNA. The economic imperative is summarised in the paper, Briefing to the Incoming Minister, December 2011, on Hekia Parata’s appointment as Minister of Education: In the current economic and fiscal climate, New Zealand’s education system needs to waste not a single opportunity to generate knowledge, skills, creativity and confidence in its young people and its workforce. This is the way we will keep hope alive, the way we will generate new jobs and the way we will compete on the world stage. We need effective teaching for every student not just the favoured few so personal selffulfilment is open to all. This should define us as a nation – keeping hope alive. And for the record: children’s, doesn’t, accommodate, basically, competition, diarrhoea, embarrassment. But on the other hand Shakespeare spelt his own name six different ways….

Gary Knight: The diverse range of Christchurch intersections deemed as traffic hot spots, based on injury accidents, speed flow and traffic volume as designated by 2014 NZTA research makes interesting reading. With Russley Rd/Memorial Ave placed at No 1 on the leader board the list converging city-wide extensively covers nine other intersections, placing Marshland /Prestons Rds at No 10. Within this context, however, an additional intersection of major concern for many is that of Treffers/Parkhouse Rds. Drivers or motor-cyclists turning right from the give way sign on Treffers Rd, into

Parkhouse Rd are confronted with traffic travelling east on Parkhouse Rd converging into the same lanes often devoid of indication. This situation having the potential for a serious or fatal accident heralds the necessity for NZTA sanction and approval for essential and overdue traffic light installation at this volatile TEE intersection. Criteria of the 2000-2016 Long Term City Council Plan to operate grant schemes for community well-being is the inherent catalyst to make this essential community installation feasible and affordable within projected city council budgeting.

Wigram move for school ANDREW KING

Sockburn School will move into Wigram – but first they need a new name. The planned relocation of the school into Wigram Skies will cost around $12 million including the cost of the land. The school has a growing roll of 200 pupils and the move will retain all the current staff. First they want to ask the community which name they would like to see on the front gate. The three names are: Wigram Primary School, Wigram Skies Primary School and Te Kahu Park School. Principal Heather Walkinshaw is asking the community to give the school feedback on the proposed names. “Naming the school is a very important task as it gives the new school the identity it will carry forward for many years to come,” she said. All names have links with Wigram. The kahu is the New Zealand hawk that was prolific in the Wigram area in years gone by and treasured by the local Maori for their feathers. The new school site is situated on The Runway, on land adja-

I have lived in Riccarton for 26 years. I went to Wharenui School then Kirkwood Intermediate School and then on to Hornby High School. So you didn’t go to Riccarton High? No. I had two older sisters who went to Hornby so I had to follow them because mum didn’t want to buy a different school uniform. There were five of us in the family and we all grew up in the area. I have lived in the same house for 19 years. You must like it then? I love it. It is clean, it is open and it is fresh which is one of the best things about living in Riccarton. yeah, lived here most of my life. You’re very active in the community, tell us a little bit about what you do? When the Riccarton Neighbourhood Policing Team came into the area looking for feedback from the public, asking what we wanted for the community, I got involved with them. I went to a meeting and I was quite inspired by the people who turned up for that meeting. I got involved with the community garden firstly. Tell us about the community gardens and your involvement? They are not just about growing carrots or stuff like that, it is a community bumping place where they can come together. Especially those that cannot speak English very well, sometimes they feel isolated because of that, so it gives them a place to integrate in the

community I have been doing the community patrols for about six years now. I have transferred over to Hornby. It’s great because it is different and a challenge which I enjoy. You must have seen some sights patrolling at night, what is the worst thing you have seen? I guess when we were parked beside a pub and we had a few guys come over to the patrol vehicle trying to do some pretty horrific things to it. They were licking the aerial and trying to get us to get out of the vehicle but we just smiled at them and carried on. What is the best? People that come up to the vehicle and ask for help. They know they can ask for help. Positive reinforcement from residents is really cool and lets us know that we are doing something right. Tell us about LinC (Leadership in Communities) Project what is it all about? It is all about bringing leaders and their communities together. even getting paid’. But I am trying to teach them the value of volunteering as much as paid work. I did however, just find my 15-year-old son tagging my fence which I was not happy about. He spent quite a while cleaning that up. He knows how to push my buttons some days. Do you see yourself continuing it on into the future? Absolutely. I am trying to actually find more to do. I have just got involved in the Lyttleton time bank. It is great. My volunteer work is something I will continue doing. I love it, I cannot get enough. It is so rewarding.

Hornby Medical Centre now has an award-winning member of staff. Nurse Leanne Lloyd received the Award of Honour, the New Zealand Nurses Organisation’s most prestigious award at a ceremony in Wellington. NZNO kaiwhakahaere Kerri Nuku said that Mrs Lloyd’s passion for the industry is a great thing. “Leanne’s passion for women’s health stems from her mother dying from cervical cancer and wanting women to have a positive experience and feel comfortable during their smear tests. “Leanne is keen to share her knowledge and mentor nurse smear takers on the Māori perspective of cervical screening. She is an inspirational role model and at the 2012 Hui ā Tau in Poneke presented on “Commu-

nity base mode of nursing care,” she said. Mrs Lloyd was humbled by the award and said ‘that it was great to be able to be recognised in a field I am very passionate about’. “I will continue to work as hard as I can in the industry that I love,” she said. Her broad knowledge and ex-

perience in primary care including cervical screening clinics, health promotion, breast screening enrolments and support to mammography was just one of the reasons she won the award. Amongst many other things, she provides a support service for young mothers with new or second children under two, in-

Riccarton High School students are learning outside of the classroom as well as in it. The context class is for year 9s at the school that emphasises cross-curricular teaching opportunities. The most recent project by the class was based in the city. Groups were responsible for a quadrant within the four avenues. Their research project required them to explore the past, present and future of their quadrant. The class is open to all students, who are keen to challenge and move outside of their comfort zone. Students complete a project and collect additional subject relevant information that they can continue to use when back in the traditional classroom. Students then present their project to parents and to the out-

the students to think outside the box, presenting the information in an unconventional way. Projects are designed and driven by the students themselves. They are responsible for seeking out and collecting information and creating their videos. The research process was enabled by contributions from local organisations who volunteered their time and facilities. It also allowed students to interact with the general public and exposed them to possible vocational pathways. An information evening for the 2016 class will be held in the Riccarton High School Staffroom Thursday, November 5, at 7pm. Cactus coach Gary White has just come on-board but already can see how rewarding the job is. “It is really about life skills,” he said “Teaching them respect for their parents and others around them while learing teamwork and looking after the people next to you. Hornby High School students have been pushing their limits physically and mentally for the last eight weeks. Rising well before the first ray of light has dawned, 20 students are in the gym at 6.25am three days a week to participate in the Cactus Kids programme. It is what the coaches call a life skills programme that put students, who wish to test them-

onto the Hornby High grounds and them around them. “The kids are knacked by the end of it but they learned valuable skills along the way,” Mr White said.

Hornby High School Years 7 – 13

Taking a long-term approach Kia ora koutou. Talofa. Kia Orana. Malo e lelei. Bula. Fakaalofa atu. Namaste. Kumusta. Haere mai ki Te Huruhuru Ao o Horomaka. Warm greetings to the Hornby High School community. On our last community page I wrote about leadership and personal development and how at Hornby HS academic and social learning support one another – two sides of the same coin. The busyness of Term 3 highlights this in both the pictured activities and our academic focus. At present Deans are having individual academic interviews to check that all is on track for the rest of this year and in preparation for 2016. Recently there has been much media comment about the renewal of Christchurch and how, contrary to some people’s more pessimistic thoughts, the present positive activity is real and the future opportunities will be there. However, Hornby HS continues to stress to our students the difference between short-term and long-term thinking. Yes, the post-earthquake Christchurch is providing plenty of opportunity but not all these opportunities will be equal. We want our students to look and think ahead so together – student, home, school – they create their own school pathway that successfully prepares them for sustainable and meaningful life pathways and employment. Long-term thinking. Our rebuild: the initial master-plan has recently been presented to our Board. The Board has some initial questions and, when these have been answered, the master-plan will be presented to the community for comment and input. From this master-plan, concept and detailed plans are created. We are fortunate to have these opportunities. Finally schools can be complex places. If for any reason you wish to talk to me about an issue please contact the office to arrange a time for this to occur. My door is open. Ngā mihi – best wishes Richard Edmundson Principal

The programme runs three mornings a week at Hornby with the students starting at 6.30am with a fitness programme. This is followed by a shower and breakfast and the students are ready to start the school day at 8.30am. The programme has proved to be so CACTUS participants: Isaac Bell, Gavin popular two groups will Lilley, Sam McKay, Chloe Catanach, Chris run next term. Tupa and Jacob Graham.

Knights players selected for NZ

Three Riccarton Knights Rugby League Masters players have been selected in their age groups to represent New Zealand in games against Australia in Auckland. Andrew Fisher will play in the 35 to 39-year-old grade, John Barr in the 40 to 49-year-old grade and Gabe Hancy will be in the 50 to 59-year-old grade.

The next cab off the rank in the first-five rugby factory that is Christchurch Boys’ High School has earned his first black jersey. Josh McKay was named in the New Zealand Schools rugby side after attending a training camp last weekend. He joins a long list of Christchurch BHS first-fives to excel in the no 10 jersey. Current All Blacks first-fives Dan Carter and Colin Slade are old boys of the school as are former All Blacks Aaron Mauger and Andrew Mehrtens. McKay’s Christchurch BHS coach, Rhys Archibald said he was thrilled for him. “Josh is a very hard worker and played hard all year. Before the season he was always the first one in the gym in the morning, he trains every day and knows how to go through the pain barrier,” Archibald said. Three other Christchurch players also made the schools side. Harrison Allan of St Andrew’s College, Shirley Boys’ High School’s hooker Brodie McAlister and St Bede’s College lock William Tucker join McKay in the side. New Zealand Schools coach Dave Hewitt, who coincidentally

attended Christchurch BHS too, said picking the side was a tough task. “This year the calibre of talent across the programme was particularly high, with consistent performances throughout making

for the final selection for the team pretty difficult – which is what you want.” The schools side was scheduled to face the New Zealand Barbarians Schools side on Saturday before heading to Brisbane to take

on the Australian Schools, Barbarians and the Samoan Schools teams starting on Thursday. Tom Christie of Shirley BHS has made that Barbarians side along with Raymond Nu’u of St Andrew’s.

Footballers receive ‘well deserved’ awards Andrew King

Halswell United women’s football has gone from not being able to field a team to almost champions across three divisions. At their prize-giving night there were plenty of ‘well deserved awards’ handed out. Halswell United AFC general manager Jenn Halliday said it was down to a ‘pretty fantastic coach’ enabling them to become competitive. Women’s head coach Vince Binding is in his second year with the club. “He has been great,” Ms Halliday said. “He gets across all of the girl’s teams, not just the senior team, and has made a real difference.” The women’s Premier Development League team finished third this year in a tight race with only one win the difference. Both their division one and two teams came second to cap off a strong year for the club.

YOUNG COACH: Junior girls coaching award went to Renee Hawley, a 16-year-old who is training up as a women’s coach at Halswell United.

hearing. Hearing is a treasure – it is a vital part of how we communicate with others (an essential part of life). You may not be aware that your hearing has deteriorated. In fact, hearing loss can occur at any age, with one in 10 New Zealanders being affected by it, making communication with others

more difficult. Any of these three situations could indicate hearing loss: 1. It’s hard to follow conversations when two or more people are talking; 2. People seem to mumble these days; 3. The volume of the TV is louder than others prefer. Carolyn Till of Gordon & Till Audiology points out that it’s often family members who first notice someone is having difficulty hearing clearly. “They notice their loved ones are not participating in family activities as they used to, and they also find they often have to repeat things.” She and fellow audiologist Carolyn Gordon advise that it is important for anyone with hearing issues to take steps as soon as possible to address the situation. “Coming to us for an initial consultation enables us to find out what communication issues you are facing,” says Carolyn Till. “If a hearing problem is found and hearing

Are you one of the 70 per cent with EXCESS CANDIDA? Do you suffer from any of the following symptoms?

H

eart burn, indigestion, feeling tired often, low energy, gas, bloating, irregular bowels, constipation or diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, frequent urination, thrush, oral thrush (whitecoated tongue), sore throat, fungal skin infections and rashes, jock itch, ring worm, vaginal or anal itching, athlete’s foot, ear ache, dry mouth, bad breath, anxiety, feeling down, depression, panic attacks, irritability, dizziness, brain fog, poor concentration, feeling spacey, poor memory, dandruff, dry and itchy skin, psoriasis, burning or tearing eyes, eye fatigue, headaches, sinusitis, nasal drip, allergies, rheumatoid arthritis, urinary tract infection, often unwell and chronic disease are just some of the common symptoms. A causative factor for all these symptoms and more can be a yeast organism called candida albicans. It is often underestimated what a profound effect it can have on our health and wellbeing. It is estimated around 70 per cent of people have a candida overgrowth in their intestine, mouth or on their skin. It is normal and beneficial to have some candida in the gut where it is normally kept under control by the good gut bacteria or probiotics that feed on this yeast. However, using antibiotics without probiotic supplementation, sickness, poor diet, insufficient stomach acid and medications are some of the common factors that can upset this delicate balance and allow the candida to thrive. The tentacles of candida can penetrate the intestinal wall over time, causing inflammation and leaky gut syndrome where toxins and only partly digested proteins can enter the bloodstream, often leading to food intolerance, poor health, allergies and susceptibility to asthma. The immune system becomes weak, and colds, influenza and chronic infections occur often. The candida yeast often enters the blood stream as a fungus. In the bloodstream, it travels around the body to places where the environment is suitable for it to inhabit. Symptoms will vary depending on its location in the body. If it enters the brain, it can cause depression, anxiety and foggy thinking. Some researchers believe the candida fungus can release a pleomorphic microorganism or virus with a form that changes depending on its environment. This is believed to be a factor in cancer and other chronic health conditions. However, it is the body’s weakened immune system

and toxic environment that is the real cause of disease. Candida imbalances in the gut can be reversed fairly easily with correct nutritional supplementation and care with diet and lifestyle. To cleanse candida fungus and its resultant toxins from the body will require a bit more effort and may take some months. However, when this is achieved, a great burden will have been removed from your body, resulting in more optimal health. The natural health advisers at Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy can provide you with a detailed nutritional protocol to cleanse the excess candida and its fungus from the body, and improve your overall health and wellbeing. Talk to us today as We are Always Happy to Help! Visit Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy at 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton. Phone 388 5757.

merging research has shown as many as 50 per cent of older adults and as many as 25 per cent of younger adults are deficient in vitamin B12. B12 is essential for energy production, cell health, regulation of mood and sleep cycles, nerve health and repair, and prevention of homocysteine, a serious cardiovascular risk factor that is known to cause damage and plaque in the blood vessels. It can also increase the chances of a stroke. Harvard researchers found a 34 per cent decrease risk of vision loss in a study of participants aged 40-plus supplemented with B12. Another study linked a higher risk of hearing loss in subjects in their 60s who were low in B12. The reason so many people lack B12 seems to be due to our body’s inability to absorb it as we age, as the digestive system becomes less efficient. Anti-reflux medication and other drugs further reduce B12 absorption. The good news is B12 in the form of

Not all first aid certificates

are created equal While first aid courses must achieve prescribed New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA) standards to be certified, not all training providers deliver the same course.

T

here can be big differences in first aid courses between a range of training providers. Some courses range from teaching only the basic NZQA specified content and nothing else, to providing detailed and comprehensive content designed to familiarise participants to a wide range of likely emergencies. Providers offering shortened courses or courses not meeting NZQA training requirements are now in the spotlight. NZQA and the Department of Labour have published a factsheet to outline requirements for providers, learners and employers for first aid training based on currently registered NZQA unit standards. Below are a summary of what we think you should know. Course differences Training providers can market their courses under a wide range of names such as Essential First Aid, Workplace First Aid or Comprehensive First Aid and many other eye-catching titles. The term workplace can vary from a small office to a large factory where the risks and potential injuries are just as wide. Employers should be cautious in thinking that a one-day workplace first aid course will meet their needs in industries such as construction, engineering, forestry and industrial. More advanced learning is important to meet the proper workplace assessments and meet health and safety obligations. The content of courses can also vary. Employers should check to see the first aid course

is relevant to their particular industry risks. If there are risks of falling, or medium to high injury, then take careful look in the shortened courses as these subjects may not be covered. It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that employees attend courses appropriate to their industry risks. Unit standard-based first aid training These are the minimum requirements for both the initial and refresher training. The minimum duration of first aid training and assessment will be for training based on: • Unit standards 6400, 6401 (or 26552) and 6402 (or 26551), a minimum of 12 hours’ training and assessment • Unit standards 6401 (or 26551) and 6402 (or 26552), a minimum of eight hours’ training and assessment • For refresher training, where the learner’s certificate is no older than two years and three months from date of issue, a minimum of six hours’ training and assessment. First aid training must cover the outcomes of the NZQA first aid unit standards being assessed and any additional modules identified by the employer through the workplace risk assessment process as outlined in Department of Labour guidelines. Only first aid training providers accredited by NZQA can award the credits and issue a first aid certificate. Care needs to be taken to ensure that the provider is actually registered with NZQA for this purpose. NZQA conduct regular External Evaluative Reviews on all training providers. New Zealand Red Cross is proud to hold a double Highly Confident accreditation in both Educational Performance and Capability in Self-Assessment. This means that NZ Red Cross is a Category One training provider. First aid refresher training Refresher training is required every two years to maintain the certificates. This is a requirement and not something for the provider to decide. The requirement allows for a three-month period of grace, so the cut off period is two years and three months which should allow sufficient time to enrol onto a suitable course. The refresher training should ensure

the certificate holder is current in first aid practice appropriate to their individual workplace requirements. If a certificate is not renewed for more than three calendar months from the second anniversary date of issue, it will be necessary for the certificate holder to complete full first aid training to maintain currency. For the purposes of workplace first aid emergency management, employers will need to ensure that their first aid personnel maintain competency at all times.

Contact New Zealand Red Cross to discuss your training requirements or visit www.redcross.org.nz. Download our free life-saving app as additional help to ensure that knowledge and help is always at your fingertips.

Return of the Annual Classic Car Show and Concours d’Elegance

T

his year marks the return of the Annual Classic Car Show and Concours d’Elegance after an absence of three years, following the Christchurch earthquakes. Pre-2010, every year without fail and regardless of the theme, spectators were guaranteed the chance to get up close and personal with more than 70 special classic and vintage vehicles as they were shown off in all their waxed and buffed glory, and this year the show will be no different. Key to the event is the proximity families and individual spectators can get to some of the most unique vehicles in New Zealand, and the fact that the cars’ owners are on hand to answer questions about the pedigree, history and specification of their charges. As well as individual exhibitors, the Classic Car Show also attracts car clubs from around the South Island as a mainstay of the vintage vehicle calendar. Most of the participating clubs will be organising their displays around a given theme, with many interesting variations expected. All of them will feature their club cars as centrepieces before filling their display areas with all sorts of props and memorabilia to catch the eyes of the judges, who will be spending the weekend comparing displays. The judges themselves are made up of a mixture of club personnel and members of the public, with the winning club receiving a large trophy and other prizes for their showmanship and attention to detail. Many cars will showcase their special pedigree while others grab attention simply for their uniqueness and rarity, but each and every one of them will be a testament to the dedication and sheer passion of their owners who will have made every effort to display them in pristine condition.

The Classic Car Show organising committee say that each year, the show keeps getting better as New Zealand’s premier indoor event of this type. There are other classic car shows in New Zealand, but this is the biggest indoor show devoted entirely to classic, vintage and rare cars in the country. It really provides people with the chance to see the very best of the South Island’s classic cars in all their glory. As usual, the show will feature a great variety of classic cars from across the world, with American, European and British vehicles rubbing shoulders under one roof at Pioneer Stadium. While seeing an Aladdin’s Cave of classic cars all on display side-by-side is considered a sight to remember by all car enthusiasts, the Canterbury Intermarque Concours d’Elegance, which takes place at every Classic Car Show, is always a particular highlight. Cars of all years and makes are eligible to participate in the competition which was first organised by the MG Car Club over 30 years ago. The event rewards enthusiasts who follow a very strict criteria of detailing, cleanliness, condition and originality, with different awards up for grabs in a diverse range of categories. Of the 80 or so vehicles which attend the show every year, around 25 enter the intense competition to be judged according to their year of manufacture, originality and condition. Prizes will be awarded at 7pm on Saturday night of the show, and the public is invited to remain for the presentations. None of this would be possible without the support of sponsors, and the organisers acknowledge the support of local car restoration firm Upper Classics, who will have their own special display at the show.

The show, held indoors at Pioneer Recreation and Sports Centre, Lyttelton Street, Spreydon, is open to the public on Saturday, September 26, from 9am to 7.30pm, and on Sunday, September 27, from 9am to 4pm. Admission $10 for adults and $2 for children.

Big engine power for Toyota Aurion SPECIFICATIONS

Whereas Toyota has just launched a new generation Camry, its stablemate, the bigengined Aurion, which shares much the same ideology, doesn’t take on such a dramatic change. However, it has had a facelift which will see it through to the end of Australian manufacture in 2017. And the reality is, there was little in the old Aurion that needed refreshing, it has been a solid performer for Toyota, it’s large car feel and spaciousness has been a lure for those who like six-cylinder engines and aren’t prepared to compromise on performance. In terms of change, the Aurion gets a new grille and bumper, while Sportivo models have garnish changes to enhance a sporty look such as big black wheels. Inside, there’s a lot of extra detail, minor fitment features such as upgraded gauges, rear window blind, audio upgrades, Bluetooth streaming and upgraded trim detailing. The Aurion lands here in

three variations, the entry-level model sits at $50,990, while a Sportivo SX6 and ZR6 are priced at $52,490 and $54,990 respectively. The evaluation car was the mid-range model, and it performs as well as it looks. Other than those changes I’ve just mentioned, the concept of Aurion hasn’t altered. It shares its 3.5-litre engine with a lot of other Toyota and Lexus product and, what’s more, it is a strong engine with high power outputs – 200kW and 336Nm, it is also managed so that efficiency isn’t overly compromised. But given its capacity and strength, it does like to work hard and freely, it will surge under acceleration providing a quick standstill to 100km/h time of 7.1sec.

Response to throttle request is sharp and instant, the power flows evenly through a six-speed automatic gearbox, the only transmission in the two-variant range. The gearbox has a manual shift function at the main gearshift lever itself and through steering wheel-mounted paddles, but such is the strength of the engine and the management process which encourages early shifts so that fuel usage isn’t wasted, I mostly let the transmission change according to its own shift patterns. Toyota claims a 9.3-litre per 100km/h (30mpg) combined cycle average which correlates well with my time with the test car at 10/100km (28mpg).

FREE Have your say about traffic changes proposed for St Asaph St. This St Asaph Street transport project is needed to support the recovery of the Central City including improved traffic flow and better cycling facilities.

keyless entry and ignition, and premium audio with iPod/USB connectivity. For safety there is traction and stability control, complex air bag network, reversing camera, blind spot monitoring and ISOFIX child seat tethers. Just like the Camry, the Aurion provides a pleasing driving experience and a level of comfort that rivals models with far greater pedigree. Every time I think that we might lose great cars like the Aurion when the Australian manufacturing industry shuts down, I can’t help but feel we are losing something traditionally Australasian. Although large car sales have dwindled in recent years thanks to the popularity of sport utility vehicles, it’s been cars like the Aurion and other Aussie sedans that have paved the way for our desire of big cars and their big engines.

At open road speed the Aurion cruises quietly, it glides through the air with just a slight hum off the Bridgestone Turanza tyres (225/45 x18in), only on coarse chip seal. It is a happy highway traveller, dispensing the kilometres with ease, and affording the occupants a comfortable, moderately firmed ride. The spring and damper rates have been well engineered so that the Aurion will absorb uneven surfaces without jolting the cabin proper. The suspension will also keep the platform and body structure even when tackling the inevitable twists and turns. Major items of equipment include dual zone climate control, comprehensive trip computer,

n entertainers’ paradise, you’ll be the toast of your friends with this spectacular arena providing the perfect backdrop for every occasion. Sumptuous, stylish and enduringly remarkable, this is a home for pure enjoyment! Strong lines and highly defined angles command instant attention, from first impression down to the finest of detailing and most thoughtful of considerations, the home stands out. The centrepiece is the expansive open plan living zone combining kitchen, dining, entertaining areas and a study nook. The designer kitchen is sleek and chic with a seemingly endless and impressive chattels list - Tristone worktops, soft close drawers, double oven and gas hobs, wine fridges, cooler/freezer drawer, dish drawers and a double-sided breakfast bar are just for starters. A sound system throughout the living spaces, outdoor entertaining areas, garage and main bedroom will help set the atmosphere. And of course the lounge/media room offers an all important built-in bar to really get the party started! Extensive floor to ceiling windows and doors create seamless indoor/ outdoor flow – the al fresco entertaining areas are equally as impressive with an expanse of Kwila decking, raised planters, precisely laid perimeter planting. There are four fabulously sized double bedrooms, the master suite enjoying a private bathroom with double shower, a walk-in wardrobe and sliders to the deck. The family

bathroom benefits from both bath and walk-in shower. Enviable storage with great fit-outs throughout ensures the home is always ‘hosting ready’. There is an extra large internal access double garage (with it’s own bar) and off-street parking, guaranteeing plentiful space for all the toys. Close to parks and shopping precincts, the home enjoys a quiet but convenient cul de sac location among similarly desirable family homes. Popular school zoning includes Roydvale Primary, Cobham Intermediate and Burnside High School. For those who believe that life is for truly living – be quick to act! This fabulous home is ready to host its lucky new owners! Open days: Saturday and Sunday, 1pm to 1.45pm. See you at the open homes or call today for a private viewing appointment, contact Deb Harvey of Harcourts Gold Papanui (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) on 352 6166 or mobile 027 220 6565.

Food will be available throughout the event with prices ranging from $15 to $25. People are advised to book food in advance to avoid disappointment," said Ernest Glad, organizer of the event. (full menu available on website www.rosebank.co/events) The festival runs Friday 2nd October 6pm until 10pm and Saturday 3rd October from 12pm until 4.00pm and 6pm until 10pm "We have imported the decor from Germany to decorate and transform Rosebank into a Bavarian Beerfest creating a fantastic atmosphere," said Ernest. This year the Canterbury Brass Band will provide the Oompah sounds and many traditional Oktoberfest music favourites will also be played. Canterbury Brass is an “A Grade Brass band. The festival has become popular for its fun contests like the Stein carrying competition,
